"because the right job might not have been invented or discovered for you yet"

I learned about a student's passion today, deconstructing and reconstructing historical fashion. It honestly never occurred to me that this was "a thing." I guess I assumed that when historians or costume designers wanted to recreate the past they looked at artwork from the period, read historical accounts, and designed based on that. They also, I learned, create patterns and new clothing from deconstructing period clothing. Now that I know this I must say "duh" how could I not have thought about this? Why I love what I do, I'm constantly learning.

I also learned about Bernadette Banner, whose Instagram and YouTube feeds show how she deconstructs and reconstructs garments, so of course I had to look her up, and I encourage you to do so as well. Banner is a 2017 NYU Tisch graduate from their Production & Design Studio and was interviewed last year for their alumni news. It's a short article but what struck me the most was this comment:

Banner said she has learned not to limit herself or settle for something she is not truly passionate about—“because the right job might not have been invented or discovered for you yet.”

I often get asked about careers in the arts that people might not have thought of, I'm going to have to use this quote going forward, because if you're creative, what you might do for a career just might not exist yet.
