We’re always surprised when we talk to people to hear their perspective on Careers in the Arts. I always start out by asking everyone to look around them. Wherever you are I can guarantee that many artists contributed to creating everything within sight and hearing.

Close your eyes and imagine your favorite cafe. The layout of the space was most likely done by an Interior Designer, the chairs are created by an Industrial Designer or Furniture Maker and covered with fabric fashioned by a Textile Designer, the barista uniforms were designed by a Fashion Designer and this is just the beginning. I could talk about the cup you drank from devised specifically (again by an Industrial Designer) not to spill displaying a logo (designed by a Branding Team) that is distinguishable across the room. The music or video playing was written, performed and marketed by a host of creatives including the MusiciansVideographersSound EngineersPerformance Managers,  Choreographers, and so on.

Now remember that last show you binged. Beyond the usual creatives roles of Producer, Cameraman, Scriptwriter, Costumer, Lighting, and Sound, there are also jobs for Scoring, Makeup, Musicians, Sound Design, Visual Effects, Performance Design, Stage Management, Musicians, Acoustics, Music Technology, Costume Technology, Scene Design, Theatre Technology, etc. To support these careers there are majors available for students who are interested, some are at conservatory based schools, others are at larger universities, almost every college/university has an active theatre program where students can have an opportunity to be involved in productions.

You’re probably beginning to get the idea, the more you think about it the more you realize that the artist is an integral part of how you experience almost everything in life and a part of all creative teams.

So, as you think about what you or your student is going to do with an art degree, or with an interdisciplinary degree that includes the arts, look around you. If you’re still wondering how you can incorporate your creativity in your college search, call us we can talk to you about your interests and your options.

If all these colleges are test optional, why are tests still important?
