Careers in the Arts

Next time you watch a performance focus on the number of creatives listed in the credits. Next time you visit your favorite coffee shop think about the creatives who created a space that you enjoy sitting in. These artists range from graphics designers to interior decorators and from lighting specialists to sound engineers. Many of them have degrees in the arts, some have degrees in allied fields. This workshop focuses on these careers, what your educational path looks like to achieve them and what it is like to work in them.

The College Process

Finding your best fit college and applying has a multitude of components and perhaps new terms if you haven’t done this before, and especially if you’re a creative student. This workshop explores the A-Z of applying to college including:

  • Finding your “best fit” colleges

  • The difference between a BFA and a BA, a College of Art and Design/Conservatory and a Traditional Liberal Arts College/University

  • Timelines for activities during the high school years and summers

  • What colleges look for in creative applicants: grades, scores, essays, portfolios, and auditions all matter

  • Writing engaging and personal college essays

  • The application timeline from college visits to application submission to acceptance

National Portfolio Day

What you should know about National Portfolio Day (NPD):

What is NPD? NPD is a college fair for the visual arts where members of the admissions committees attend and comment on your portfolio.

Why go to NPD? It is a great chance to get feedback on your work from experts in the field and who may decide your admissions. It is also an opportunity to learn more about specific schools and show interest in schools that you may not have a chance to visit.

Who should go to NPD? Any high school student who is considering attending a BFA program and who has work they'd like reviewed should go.

Where and when are the NPDs? The National Portfolio Day website is the best source for this information.

Summer Activity Planning

We’ll discuss the process for securing those desired spots, and how students can fill the summer months with meaningful activities that are personally rewarding and impressive for college application purposes.

We’ll discuss how to research colleges and compile comprehensive lists. College admissions web pages are a great place to start the process, but can they really help students determine their best fits? While not the same as physically visiting a school, our strategies go a long way toward helping students discover where they’d like to spend the next four years of their lives.

Building Your College List

We’ll look at the landscape from 30,000 feet, as they say, and break the process into manageable steps. The college application process can be intimidating, but with a long term, comprehensive plan, students will be better prepared and less stressed as they tackle it.

Overview of the College Application Timeline

The truth is more and more colleges are requiring resumes. We’ll share some Dos and Don’ts, along with best practices for creating a document that will live and grow with students throughout college and far beyond.

Resume Basics

How important are the college essays? In a word ... VERY!! Many students have similar grades, test scores, and extracurricular activities.
