What do students need for an architecture portfolio?

Most architecture portfolios require students to demonstrate that they can draw from observation, create perspective drawings, solve problems in three-dimensional space, and understand proportion. Some schools have specific portfolio requirements, so students should check each program carefully. Depending on the program, schools may also ask for sketches and site plans, so students should continue developing their sketchbook work.

Do I need to show that I know CAD in my portfolio?

Most schools we have talked to emphasize that students do not need to demonstrate an ability to use CAD software because it is something they teach in the program. Requirements can vary, so students should check with each school. This can also be a good opportunity to develop a relationship with the program.

Do I need to show built examples or just designs?

Our most successful students show that they can build with their hands and include photographs of built work in their portfolios.

What does an Architecture or Design portfolio look like?

We help students interested in architecture and design show that they can think and create in 3D spaces. Whether they are interested in building design, product design, interior design, or landscape design we work with them to show colleges their unique voice.

Most architecture portfolios require students to have the ability to draw what they see, draw perspective drawings, problem solve in three dimensional space, understand proportion in space. Some schools have specific portfolio requirements so be sure to check them. Depending on the program some schools ask for sketches and site plans so make sure to keep your sketchbook drawings.
Most schools we’ve talked to emphasize that students do NOT need to show an ability to use CAD software as that is something they teach in the program. Since it’s impossible to give a definitive answer it’s best to check with the school, and that’s a great excuse to develop your relationship with them at the same time!
